Discussion List

global-borderstudies@relay.doit.wisc.edu
A LISTSERVE devoted to issues of intercultural contact from a global perspective

Since 1996, the Border and Transcultural Research Circle (BTCS) has devoted its energies to promoting discussion and exchange about intercultural contact and cultural practices in a global and historical perspective. Our goal is to foster discussion of the intercultural sites of hybridity produced by the movements and migrations of peoples, cultural practices, and commercial goods. We encourage attention to the contact zones where power circulates, cultures blend and clash, and various groups resist, reject, or imitate others. We examine how agency is negotiated multidirectionally within the structures and processes of interactive exchange.

As an interdisciplinary group, we also encourage the transgression of disciplinary boundaries in the academy, as well as the often contentious borders between "area studies" and "global studies." The BTCS Research Circle combines the strengths of disciplinary depth and interdisciplinary breadth to foster the rethinking of local formations in a global context. To extend the work of BTCS beyond the UW-Madison campus, we have designed this list to enable scholars everywhere to exchange ideas and share information about cultural studies in a global context. We hope the possibilities of cyberspace will facilitate the further flow of ideas and border crossings within and between institutions of knowledge. This email discussion list provides an exciting new outlet for discussion and/or sharing of recent scholarship, as well as disseminating information about relevant publications and conferences. Rebecca Walsh, rawalsh@facstaff.wisc.edu, is the founder, owner, and maintainer of this unmoderated email list. Susan Stanford Friedman, ssfriedm@facstaff.wisc.edu, is the coordinator of BTCS.
